Benny Goodman and his band are on their way to a military camp for a performance when a young boy steals Goodman's clarinet. The boy leads them to a tenement flat where they discover his brother, Johnny Birch, playing the trombone. Goodman offers Johnny a job with the band, despite some initial hesitation.
