Dr. Harper Higgins, an Adjunct Professor of Art History, teaches an adult painting class to make ends meet. She once dreamed of being a painter herself, but a scathing review by her ex-boyfriend and art critic, Rick, led her to put down her brush. Harper hopes a successful art exhibition at the Cambridge Institute of Fine Arts will secure her a full-time position. When the featured artist backs out, Harper turns to her dog walker, Tom Becker, whose untrained but remarkable artwork she admires. Tom agrees to display his work, partly due to his attraction to Harper and partly to pay for his crumbling houseboat's repairs. Harper tells two lies to her boss to convince him to feature Tom's work, including a false claim that Tom is the great-great-grandson of Vincent van Gogh. As the exhibition approaches, Harper and Tom's relationship blossoms, but the risk of the lie being discovered threatens their careers and relationship.
