During World War II, a group of French soldiers, imprisoned by the Germans, use their wit and resourcefulness to survive the harsh conditions of a POW camp, and eventually hatch a bold plan to escape.

As World War II breaks out, Frenchmen from all backgrounds join the army, but their hopes are crushed when the Germans swiftly defeat them and Marshall Petain signs a peace agreement with the invaders. Instead of being sent home, the soldiers are imprisoned in a POW camp, where conditions are harsh with limited food and poor medical care.
