The Devil's Agent background

The Devil's Agent

A spy's allegiance is tested when he becomes entangled in a passionate affair with a captivating Hungarian refugee in the midst of Cold War tensions in East Germany.

The Cold War is in full swing in 1950, with Vienna divided into four sectors controlled by the Western Allies and the Soviet Union. Austrian wine merchant George Droste, who previously worked for German Army Intelligence, becomes embroiled in a spy game between Western and Soviet agencies after accidentally bumping into former comrades and friends. Unwittingly, he becomes a courier for secret documents and is recruited by Western Intelligence to carry out missions, including one in Communist Hungary, where he falls in love with a defector. After completing the mission, Droste is sent to Hamburg, Germany, but grows tired of the spy game and wants to return to his quiet life with his son and Hungarian lover. However, both Western and Soviet Intelligence refuse to let him go, and an ex-Abwehr General sends killers after him, feeling betrayed over a confidential mission involving the Abwehr's Eastern Front archives.
