In a small New England town, a Puritan named Dick Dudgeon is mistaken for a local minister and arrested by the British. He chooses not to expose the real minister and instead continues to pretend to be the reverend. The minister's wife, Judith, is drawn to Dick's actions and mistakenly believes he is in love with her. Despite Dick's protests, Judith finds herself attracted to him. Dick is brought before the British commander, General Burgoyne, and shows his willingness to die for his principles.
