A coal-red barge stoker, Bill Roberts, toils under the tyranny of foreman Andy, until he rescues a suicidal woman, Mae, from the water. He becomes smitten with her, but Andy also develops feelings for her. Bill proposes, but leaves her behind without a marriage license. Despite this, he returns to help her when she's in trouble.
