In early 20th-century Austria, a charming traveling salesman named Virgil Smith tries to peddle his Grammophones to the emperor, but his attempts are initially foiled by palace guards who mistake his device for a bomb. After meeting the beautiful Countess Johanna von Stolzenberg-Stolzenberg, Virgil finds himself smitten, with his loyal dog Buttons playing matchmaker.
