In 1986, Matt Dresdner was inspired by Mia Zapata's singing to form a punk rock group, The Gits, with friends at Antioch College. They relocated to Seattle in 1989 and gained popularity in the early 1990s with their soulful street punk. The band was poised for national success when Mia was tragically murdered in 1993.
