The King and the Clown background

The King and the Clown

In 17th-century Korea, two clowns are arrested for mocking the king in a play and must utilize their comedic talents to captivate the monarch and spare their lives from a capital punishment.

Soul mate minstrels Jang-sang and Gong-gil struggle to make a living in 14th century Korea through their bawdy tightrope act. However, their success is threatened when the rich become too interested in Gong-gil's androgynous looks. After a line is crossed, they flee to Seoul and join a group of fellow minstrels. They present riskier shows, but their latest satirical performance puts them under arrest and on a death sentence. They are forced to perform for the king, who becomes infatuated with Gong-gil. The king's mistress and nobles conspire to have them executed, but Jang-sang and Gong-gil must decide whether to flee or stay.
