In World War I, Major Charles White Whittlesey leads a 500-man battalion in a doomed attack against German forces in the Argonne Forest. With his communications cut and support troops retreating, Whittlesey holds his ground against overwhelming odds, surrounded by the enemy. Despite dire conditions, only 200 men survive the five-day siege.
