Jim Douglas, a struggling race car driver, lives in a run-down firehouse with his mechanic friend Tennessee Steinmetz. After discovering a mysterious Volkswagen Beetle that can drive on its own, Jim repairs the car and names it Herbie. With Herbie's help, Jim's racing career takes off, but the car's owner, Peter Thorndyke, wants it back and will stop at nothing to get it.

A down-on-their-luck racing driver's luck changes dramatically when they partner with a charismatic, self-aware Volkswagen Beetle, whose extraordinary capabilities are unveiled when a cunning rival attempts to pilfer the car.
