In 1920s Paris, a struggling American artist named Nick Hart navigates the city's expatriate community, frequenting local cafés and trying to sell his artwork to gallery owner Libby Valentin. When he becomes entangled in a scheme to forge three paintings for wealthy patroness Nathalie de Ville, he finds himself at odds with American rubber magnate Bertram Stone, who happens to be married to his ex-wife Rachel.
