The story takes place in 1913 Northumbria, England, and follows Robert Bradley, a young shipyard worker who loses his father and finds a new home and apprenticeship with his uncle. He befriends an enigmatic girl, Millie Thorman, known as the Moth, and things seem to be going well until his cousin's pregnancy scandal spreads, with Robert being the prime suspect. Despite his denials, he leaves his relatives and finds work on the Thorman estate, where he develops feelings for Sarah, Millie's sister, but their social differences and Robert's reputation create obstacles.
