A 12-year-old boy, Nicholas, is torn between his intense attraction to his best friend Bobby and his fear of losing him. As Nicholas's feelings grow, he becomes increasingly anxious and confused. When visions of his absent father appear, Nicholas's fears escalate, and he mistakenly believes his father is trying to separate him from Bobby. In a desperate attempt to hold onto Bobby, Nicholas kisses him, but Bobby storms off, leaving Nicholas in shame. Bobby's emotional response causes him to split into two personas: a healthy self and a decrepit, ghoulish version. Nicholas becomes drawn to the creature and secretly cares for it, ultimately forced to confront his true feelings.
