Thomas Crimmins, a young and idealistic prison guard, is determined to serve his country by upholding justice. However, his superior, Regan, reveals a more compassionate approach, recognizing that prisoners are human beings. As Crimmins becomes involved with Kathleen, the wife of a condemned man, he begins to question the black-and-white morality of his world. When new evidence arises, Crimmins is faced with a dilemma between his duty and his growing sense of humanity.
