During the Sino-Japanese war, a young army nurse named Sakura Nishi is deployed to field hospitals in China in 1939. She works alongside surgeon Dr. Okabe, performing numerous amputations. In the chaotic wards, Sakura shows compassion to wounded soldiers, including one who has lost both arms and has no hope of returning home. She develops feelings for Dr. Okabe, who is struggling with morphine addiction and impotence.
