During the Cold War, a Russian submarine captain ventures too close to Gloucester Island in Massachusetts, stranding his vessel. A nine-man team, led by Lieutenant Rozanov, sets out to find a motorboat to free their submarine, and they arrive at the summer home of New York writer Walt Whittaker, who's spending the weekend with his family.
