In the midst of the 1999 war in Chechnya, a French aid worker forms an unexpected bond with a young boy who has been orphaned, finding comfort and hope in their unlikely friendship.

In 1999, a Chechnyan family is torn apart by the Russian invasion, leaving three siblings separated. Hadji, a 9-year-old boy, believes his sister Raissa and parents are dead and sets out to care for his baby brother, only to become swept up in the refugee crisis. He finds shelter at a refugee center in Nazran, where he befriends a Frenchwoman named Carole, who is documenting the conflict for the Human Rights Committee. Despite not speaking the same language, Carole takes Hadji under her wing, providing for him and forming a bond until she can uncover his story and find a solution. Meanwhile, Raissa embarks on a journey to reunite with her brothers.
