A childless Los Angeles realtor, Allison Kelly, and her novelist husband, Jacob, decide to use surrogacy to have a child after being diagnosed with infertility. They choose Kate, a young woman and friend, who recently started working at Jacob's college, as their surrogate. Unbeknownst to them, Kate has been obsessed with Jacob and manipulated her way into the job, with the goal of being with him as a couple and using the child as a pawn. As Kate sets her plan in motion, a man named Matt begins searching for her, connected to the original surrogate, Remy Daniels, who Kate had killed. Allison and Jacob must now navigate Kate's deceit and consider the welfare of their unborn child, as well as their own lives, with Allison facing the possibility of being "the other woman".
