Vashti Blue, an unemployed actress, returns to her apartment and listens to her answering machine, hearing messages from her agent and a notification about her overdue telephone bill. She also hears a mysterious voice believed to be her former lover, Larry. Throughout the night, Vashti makes various phone calls, entertaining herself and annoying her neighbor. Later, her former agent, Rodney, and his new client, Honey Boxe, arrive, asking to use her phone, but Vashti refuses, leading to a confrontation.
