In the heart of Paris, a timid bureaucrat named Trelkovsky moves into an apartment with a dark past, where a former tenant took her own life. As he navigates his new living space, he's met with strict rules and unwelcoming neighbors, including a gruff concierge and a demanding landlord. Despite these challenges, Trelkovsky finds solace in a hospital visit with Simone, an Egyptologist who's on her deathbed, and her girlfriend Stella. But after Simone's passing, Trelkovsky becomes consumed by a morbid fascination with her and starts to believe his landlord and neighbors are plotting to drive him to suicide as well.
