Webster McGee, a computer engineer, quits his job at Control Data Corporation due to corruption and decides to become a jewel thief. He aims to be an honest thief, targeting corrupt businessman Gene Henderling first. After a successful theft, Webster starts a relationship with socialite Laura Keaton, who knows about his new profession. As the Chess Burglar, he leaves a calling card at each crime scene, taunting insurance investigator David Reilly and chess columnist Zukovsky, while also rekindling a romance with his ex-wife, actress Jackie Johnson.
