Finland, trapped between two repressive regimes, allies itself with Nazi Germany against its traditional foe, while remaining a democracy. A brutal war against Soviet occupation takes place in the Far North, as a Finnish infantry unit marches through Karelia to regain lost territory. The men realize the horror and pointlessness of war, except for their officers, who prioritize medals and personal glory. Despite their differences, the men form a bond of camaraderie, making huge personal sacrifices and fighting in a prolonged trench war, ultimately leading to a ceasefire in September 1944.
