Italian immigrant Nino Culotta arrives in Australia with a job promise, only to find his cousin's magazine has folded and the money for his fare was borrowed from a local construction firm's daughter. Nino struggles to find work, eventually landing a job laying bricks, where he befriends locals and falls in love with Kay. However, Kay's father, the boss of a construction firm, disapproves of Nino's profession and nationality, leading to a series of challenges as Nino tries to win him over.
