Dr. Braun, a Viennese surgeon, and his daughter Leni flee Nazi Germany and settle in a small North Dakota town. However, the devastating Dust Bowl forces the town to relocate to Oregon, led by John Phillips. As they make the journey, Leni finds herself torn between her arranged marriage to a man who helped them escape the Third Reich and her growing feelings for John.
