Novelist Malcolm Niles' plans for a romantic evening with actress Vivian Herford are disrupted when she brings her mother along. He then meets Nancy Briggs at a bookstore in a small southern town, where she's about to get married but her fiancé doesn't show up. Malcolm gets a wire from his publisher to return home, where Vivian has left, and Nancy follows him to New York. As they navigate the city together, Malcolm uses Nancy as an excuse to get rid of Vivian, but things get complicated when his friend Robert falls in love with Nancy, making Malcolm jealous.
