In post-war Japan, Master Sergeant Hugh O'Reilly struggles with his disdain for the Japanese. However, his encounter with a charming interpreter leads him to discover an orphanage in dire need of assistance. As he rallies fellow soldiers to rebuild the orphanage, his prejudices gradually dissipate, replaced by a newfound understanding and appreciation for the Japanese people.
