In occupied France during World War II, an American pilot named John is rescued by the French Resistance after being shot down and taken to a convent. There, he meets a young novice named Clothilde who is drawn to him and willing to aid his escape to England. To avoid detection, John assumes the identity of the husband of Madame Bouchard, a woman from a nearby village.
