In early 20th-century Paris, Claude Roc, a young Frenchman, befriends Englishwoman Ann Brown. Ann invites Claude to spend holidays at her family's home, where he becomes close with her mother and sister Muriel, whom Ann intends for him. Claude grows to love Muriel, but the families impose a year-long separation before marriage. Claude returns to Paris, having many affairs, and eventually sends Muriel a breakup letter.
