In 16th century Japan, amidst the chaos of civil wars, a powerful story of human bond emerges.

In 16th century Japan, a farmer and craftsman named Genjurô makes a fortune selling wares in Nagahama, but his neighbor Tobei, a foolish man, dreams of becoming a samurai. Despite warnings from their wives about the approaching army, the two men team up to manufacture clay potteries, hoping to enrich themselves. However, their plans are derailed when they flee their looted village, leaving their families behind. As they travel to a bigger town, they encounter pirates and Genjurô is forced to abandon his wife and child. Tobei leaves his wife to pursue his samurai ambitions, while Genjurô becomes embroiled in the affairs of a wealthy aristocrat, Lady Wakasa. Ultimately, Genjurô and Tobei must confront the true cost of their ambition.
