In 1939, amidst war in Europe and the Mexican Day of Death celebrations, a British consul's life unravels in a small Mexican town. Geoffrey Firmin, an alcoholic and disillusioned man, is struggling to cope with his own demise. His half-brother Hugh and ex-wife Yvonne, who has returned to the town, are desperate to save him from himself and revive their troubled marriage.
