John Ferguson, a retired detective, becomes fixated on two women: Madeleine Elster, a wealthy and elegant platinum blonde, and Judy Barton, a working-class brunette who bears an uncanny resemblance to Madeleine. His obsession troubles his friend and former fiancée, Midge Wood, as John becomes consumed by his desire to uncover the connection between the two women. His fixation is further complicated by his acrophobia, which causes severe vertigo whenever he is in high places.
