Akon, whose birth name is Aliaune Thiam, had a childhood marked by significant geographical and cultural transformations. Born in Senegal, he spent his formative years in this West African country before his family, including his father Mor Thiam, a renowned jazz percussionist, made the life-altering decision to relocate to the United States.
It was in the state of New Jersey, Akon's new home, where he first discovered the influential genres of hip-hop and R&B, as well as the harsh realities of crime. Unfortunately, his association with these elements ultimately led to his incarceration, but even behind bars, Akon found a silver lining. He utilized his time to nurture his musical aspirations, developing his craft and refining his artistic vision.
Upon his release, Akon returned to his home studio, where he began to write and record tracks that would eventually capture the attention of SRC/Universal. The label's interest in his work led to the release of his debut LP, "Trouble," in June 2004.
This groundbreaking album was a masterful blend of Akon's hip-hop influenced lyrical style, silky West African-styled vocals, and beats that drew inspiration from both the East Coast and Southern regions of the United States.
