Biography

Alexander Carson, also known as Sandy, is a renowned Canadian filmmaker whose body of work masterfully weaves together the threads of collective practice and personal storytelling. His films have been showcased at prestigious events, including the Toronto International Film Festival and the San Francisco International Film Festival, where he received the esteemed Golden Gate Award for New Visions in 2014.

Carson's critically acclaimed first feature film as writer/director, O, Brazen Age, was completed in 2015, and his latest feature film, Alberta Number One, premiered at the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montréal and the Chicago International Film Festival in 2024.

A highly educated individual, Carson holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and a Master of Arts (MA) degree from the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema at Concordia University in Montreal, as well as a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Creative Practice from Transart Institute, Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.

In addition to his filmmaking endeavors, Carson is a founding member of the North Country Cinema media arts collective in Calgary, Alberta, and serves as a Professor of Creative Arts at Yorkville University. He resides in Toronto with his partner and two sons.
