Alexander's family was quite extensive, with notable members including his uncle, Georg Hahn, who was an ice-hockey trainer. His grandmother, Paula Hahn, was a fish-selling dancing queen, adding a touch of flair and excitement to the family's dynamics. Alexander embarked on a linguistic journey by enrolling in a language school in Munich for a period of one year, preceding his enrollment at the esteemed Vienna Film Academy. It was during his tenure at the film academy that he established a professional connection with the renowned Latvian filmmakers, Ivars Seleckis and Talivalvis Margevics, and even had the privilege of serving as their interpreter at a prominent film festival. This valuable experience laid the groundwork for his future endeavors, as he subsequently had the opportunity to helm his inaugural 35mm short feature film in Latvia, mere moments prior to the declaration of independence by the Baltic states from the Soviet Union.
Alexander Hahn, a German national, made the significant move to Austria in 1989, marking the beginning of his illustrious career in the film industry. Following his graduation from the esteemed Vienna Filmacademy in 1996, he went on to direct his debut feature film, "Far Away From St. Petersburg", which garnered widespread recognition and accolades. The film received the prestigious Gold Special Jury Award at the Houston International Film Festival in 1993 and was also showcased at the renowned AFI Film Festival in Los Angeles.
