Biography

Alice Calhoun, a singular and unconventional actress from Cleveland, Ohio, diverged from the traditional trajectory to the film industry by eschewing a stage career, instead finding herself drawn to the captivating allure of the silver screen. In stark contrast to the prevailing norm, the notion of performing on stage held no appeal for her, and she instead became enamored with the prospect of breaking into the world of movies. This unyielding passion drove her to embark on a journey to the East Coast, specifically New York, in the late 1910s, as the region was then the epicenter of the motion picture business, offering unparalleled opportunities for aspiring actresses such as herself.

Pathe Pictures, a renowned film production company, took notice of the captivating and youthful beauty from Cleveland, Ohio, and exhibited a keen interest in her nascent potential as a performer.

Notwithstanding her complete lack of prior experience in the acting profession, the studio, in a bid to nurture her talent, provided her with comprehensive dramatic training by casting her in several Broadway productions, including the 1917 staging of the popular play, "How Could You, Caroline?", a theatrical endeavour that served as a valuable stepping stone in her burgeoning career.

As Alice Calhoun's skill and expertise in her profession continued to flourish, she was ultimately awarded film roles, and her remarkable career spanned nearly five decades, with her presence being felt in almost 50 movies. Her remarkable breakthrough in the cinematic world came with the starring vehicle "Princess Jones" in 1921, which was a resounding success, captivating audiences everywhere.

Her impressive filmography, a testament to her dedication and perseverance, stood the test of time, with only her final film, "Now I'll Tell" in 1934, being a talkie.

Noted actress Alice Calhoun, whose remarkable yet abbreviated professional tenure captivated audiences, ultimately bid farewell to the entertainment world, bringing an end to her illustrious career.

Her life was cut tragically short, as she succumbed to the devastating effects of cancer, departing this mortal coil in the city of angels, Los Angeles, in the year 1966.
