Colin Alister Lockhart, a Scottish-born Australian, was born in Dumfries, Scotland, to Robert Alister and Alison Mitchell Lockhart (née Kirkpatrick). He has an older brother, Andrew John, and a younger sister, Lynn Alison Babich. Lockhart's family relocated to Forbes, New South Wales, Australia, where he spent his childhood on a farm until he left for university in 1990.
Lockhart pursued a bachelor's degree in Graphic Design at the University of Newcastle (Australia) and upon graduating, he moved to Sydney. He worked as a freelance illustrator and produced background art with Disney's Sydney-based TV Animation Studio. He then accepted the position of Art Director with Strategic Studies Group, working on their acclaimed 'Warlords' Series.
In 2004, Lockhart relocated to Melbourne and worked as Art Director with games companies Tantalus Media and Infinite Interactive. During this time, he worked on several notable titles, including 'Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon', 'Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole', and 'Puzzle Quest 2'.
Lockhart's career as a filmmaker began after meeting his writing and directing partner, Patrick Sarell, while working at Tantalus Media in 2004. He wrote and directed several video-game cinematics before being approached by Sarell with the treatment for the animated short 'Nullarbor' in 2006. After securing funding, production of the short began in collaboration with Melbourne-based animation house 'The Lampshade Collective'. 'Nullarbor' is Lockhart's first short film.
In his personal life, Lockhart was married to Sandra Margaret Setian in 2003. They have two sons, Lucas Alister (born August 8, 2007),and Robert Haig (born June 19, 2009). He currently resides in Melbourne, Australia.
