Amrita Rao was born on June 7, 1986, in the Rao family, in the vibrant city of Mumbai. As a native of the region, she is fluent in the Konkani language and hails from a well-established Hindu family. Her father, the owner of an advertising agency, has played a significant role in shaping her life.
Despite having a strong inclination towards the glamour world, Amrita initially pursued a career in psychology, graduating with a degree in the field. However, her stint with cameras and bright lights was far from over, as she went on to model for approximately 35 advertisements. Her first assignment was for Fairever Face Cream, and she also worked with renowned brands like Hindustan Lever's 'Close-up', Cadbury's Perk, and Nestle Bru Coffee.
Amrita's big break came when director Ken Ghosh approached her for his debut movie, Ishq Vishq, after seeing her in a Cadbury's Perk commercial. Her portrayal of a hungry bride eagerly awaiting the arrival of her husband on the occasion of 'Karva Chauth' earned her widespread recognition, and the film's massive success catapulted her to stardom virtually overnight.
As a brand ambassador, Amrita has represented esteemed brands like D'Damas Gold Jewellery, Parachute Hair Oil, and Miss Players Apparels. Her subsequent hit movies, Masti (2004),Main Hoon Na (2004),and Vivah (2006),further solidified her position as a leading lady in Bollywood. While some of her films, such as Pyare Mohan, Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi, Shikhar, and Deewar, received mixed reviews, she has won six awards, predominantly for her performances in Ishq Vishk and Vivah.
At the tender age of 25, Amrita has already made a significant impact in the industry, with her performances and dancing skills earning her widespread acclaim. Her versatility as an actress has been praised by critics and audiences alike, with Madhuri Dixit going gaga over her performance at the Filmfare Awards 2007. Notably, renowned artist M.F. Hussain chose her as his muse and theme for his paintings, following in the footsteps of Madhuri Dixit.
Amrita has also ventured into the Telugu film industry, starring in a movie that turned out to be a massive box-office hit. A polyglot, she is fluent in English, Hindi, Marathi, and is passionate about reading short stories. Despite being allergic to spicy Indian food, she prefers bland continental cuisine and has a sweet tooth for desserts like Gulab Jamun.
Throughout her career, Amrita has shared the screen with talented actors such as Shahid Kapur, Zayed Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Akshay Khanna, and Mahesh Babu. At the young age of 25, she has already won the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Academy Award and is all set to continue her successful innings in Bollywood.
