Andrew Unsworth is a prominent figure in the world of music, holding the esteemed position of one of three full-time organists at the historic Tabernacle in Salt Lake City. As a part of his duties, he participates in the daily recital series on the magnificent 206-rank Æolian-Skinner organ, which is a true marvel of sound and craftsmanship.
In addition to his work at the Tabernacle, Dr. Unsworth has the privilege of accompanying the renowned Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square (formerly known as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir) on its weekly radio and television broadcast, "Music and the Spoken Word." This broadcast is a beloved institution, bringing joy and inspiration to listeners around the world.
Born and raised in Potsdam, New York, Dr. Unsworth comes from a family of musicians, and it was only natural that he would follow in their footsteps. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance and pedagogy from Brigham Young University, and then went on to earn his master's and doctoral degrees in historical performance practice from Duke University.
Prior to his appointment on Temple Square, Dr. Unsworth served as the organist and assistant director of music at the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City. He also taught music history and organ as an assistant professor at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas.
As a performer, Dr. Unsworth has had the opportunity to travel throughout the United States and Europe, giving recitals and accompanying other musicians. He has performed at regional and national conventions of the Organ Historical Society and the American Guild of Organists, and has even released a solo organ recording, French and German Masterworks, on the Raven label.
Dr. Unsworth is also a respected member of the organ community, holding the Associateship certificate from the American Guild of Organists. He was awarded the S. Lewis Elmer Award by the same organization, a testament to his dedication and skill.
In his personal life, Dr. Unsworth is married to Alison, and they are the proud parents of five children. Despite his many responsibilities and commitments, Dr. Unsworth clearly values his family and makes time for them whenever possible.
