Initially, he began his singing career with Gus Arnheim's orchestra at the renowned Cocoanut Grove, where he was discovered by Arnheim himself. However, due to Russell's tender age of 13, Arnheim was forced to become his legal guardian to enable him to travel outside of his home state.
With his captivating romantic baritone voice, Russell sang a repertoire of songs in both English and Spanish, with his biggest hit being the iconic "Besame Mucho" released in 1945 through Capitol Records.
