Angela Browne's fascination with cinema began in early childhood, where she would imagine herself as the heroine on the big screen during frequent visits to the pictures. At the age of thirteen, she left her Catholic convent school to pursue her passion for acting at the Cone-Ripman Drama Academy in London. After four years, she earned a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).
Angela then joined repertory companies in Worthing, York, and Scarborough, eventually making her West End debut in the 1959 comedy "The Marriage Go-Round" alongside John Clements and Kay Hammond. She was meticulous in her craft, studying the films of Ingmar Bergman to ensure her portrayal of a Swedish character was authentic.
By 1960, Angela had established herself as one of the most promising up-and-coming actresses on the stage, with a string of successful performances in both comedy and drama. Her striking beauty and vivacious personality soon caught the attention of television producers.
Angela co-starred with Patrick McGoohan in the 1960 episode "The Girl in Pink Pajamas" of the cult series "Danger Man," and later reunited with him in the 1967 episode "A Change of Mind" of "The Prisoner." Her iconic role as "No. 86," a mind-control specialist, has become her most enduring legacy.
Angela continued to work in television, with recurring roles in "Ghost Squad" and guest appearances in "The Saint" and "The Avengers." She also appeared in the Norman Wisdom farce "Press for Time" and became a regular fixture on British television.
After marrying actor Francis Matthews, Angela stepped back from her acting career to focus on raising a family. She eventually returned to acting in the 1970s, taking on character roles and appearing in plays by Noël Coward, Henrik Ibsen, and Alan Ayckbourn.
Angela Browne retired from acting in 1990 and dedicated the remainder of her life to her family and charity work.
