Angela Witherspoon's journey in the acting world began when she was cast in her first speaking role opposite Eddie Murphy in "48 Hours," a production led by renowned producer Joel Silver. Walter Hill, the director, took notice of her talent and subsequently cast her in another movie, "Crossroads", alongside Ralph Macchio.
In 1983, she embarked on an international adventure, traveling to Cuernavaca, Mexico, where she spent five weeks filming "Jungle Warriors" under the direction of German filmmaker Ernst R. Von Theumer. As she took on the challenge of performing her own stunts, she had the opportunity to work alongside the talented Dennis Hopper and even fired an AK-47.
The following year, she attended the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, where she had the pleasure of dining with director Howard Avedis. Avedis would later cast her in "Kidnapped," a Warner Bros. film starring David Naughton, where she would meet her future husband, John Witherspoon.
Throughout her career, Angela continued to work in film and television, appearing in notable productions such as "Ugly Betty", "Joan of Arcadia", "Soul Plane", "The Wayans Bros.", "L.A. Law", "Criminal Minds," "My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," "Black Jesus," and a starring role in "The Moment After."
Angela's journey on stage began when she participated in a full production of Theresa Rebeck's play, "Loose Knit" at the Jewel Box Theatre, alongside Lee Ann Matusek, who would later become her producing partner.
She credits her coach Richard Lawson with encouraging her to pursue her passion for filmmaking. In 2013, she directed her first short film, "Last Call". Soon after, she produced and directed a short documentary on artist Betye Saar. She then wrote and directed the short silent film "Sunset & Neverland." Angela also produced and directed "Wish Me Luck." Her first documentary received widespread acclaim in 2017. In 2021, she is set to release a full-length documentary about artist Betye Saar, which she is producing and directing.
Currently, Angela is working with young talent such as Juhahn Jones, Maia Modeste, and director Abdul Malik Abbott. This summer, she will be working on an original script by Jahmela B. Yarbrough, in which she will be playing Will Cattlett's mother.
