Angeliki Papoulia was born in the vibrant city of Athens, Greece, and went on to graduate from the prestigious Athens University, where she studied Theatre Studies, and the renowned "Empros" Theatre Drama School in the year 2000. Throughout her academic journey, she honed her skills in the English and French languages, which would later become essential tools in her professional endeavors.
Papoulia's impressive filmography boasts an array of critically acclaimed productions, including the 2002 film "Matchbox," directed by Yiannis Economides, in which she played the role of Kiki. Her subsequent collaboration with the acclaimed director Yorgos Lanthimos resulted in the 2009 film "Dogtooth," which garnered the "Prix Un Certain Regard" at the Cannes Film Festival and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards in 2011.
Her work with Lanthimos continued with the 2011 film "Alps," which won the Osella for Best Screenplay at the 68th Venice International Film Festival, and the 2015 film "The Lobster," which took home the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and received a Best Original Screenplay nomination at the 89th Academy Awards.
Papoulia's extensive filmography also includes appearances in "A Blast" (2014),"The Miracle of the Sargasso Sea" (2019),and "Amulet" (2020),as well as the critically acclaimed "Green Sea" (2018),directed by Angeliki Antoniou.
In addition to her work in film, Papoulia has made a significant impact in the world of theatre. In 2004, she co-founded the blitz theatre group, which she has written, directed, and acted in numerous productions for, including performances at prominent festivals and theatres in France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Austria, Norway, Greece, Turkey, and Lebanon.
Throughout her career, Papoulia has received numerous accolades, including the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Actress at the Sarajevo Film Festival in 2009 for her role in "Dogtooth." Her dedication to her craft has led her to collaborate with esteemed directors such as Michael Marmarinos, Lefteris Vogiatzis, Yorgos Houvardas, and Yorgos Lanthimos, among others.
In recent years, Papoulia has expanded her horizons by co-directing performances at the Luzerner Theater in Luzern, Switzerland, alongside Christos Passalis. Her impressive body of work continues to captivate audiences worldwide, solidifying her position as a prominent figure in the world of Greek cinema and theatre.
