Anita Best has dedicated her life to delving into, documenting, and cherishing the rural Newfoundland lifestyle and culture, ultimately emerging as one of the province's most renowned traditional singers.
Born on Merasheen Island in Placentia Bay, a location since abandoned due to the resettlement program, Best has pursued a multifaceted career as an educator, archivist, folklorist, broadcaster, and singer.
Her fascination with oral history, encompassing songs and stories passed down through generations, served as the catalyst for her performing career. She has embarked on extensive tours as a storyteller and singer, made numerous television and radio appearances, and contributed her voice to several Newfoundland recordings.
Best is most widely recognized for her two albums: The Colour Of Amber, a collaborative effort with Pamela Morgan, released in 1993, and Crosshanded, a collection of twelve solo songs, which followed a few years later.
Throughout these recordings and performances, Best tends to deviate from the standard Newfoundland repertoire, instead showcasing lesser-known songs and stories gathered from across the province.
In addition to her musical endeavors, Anita Best is also the co-author of the folk song collection Come And I Will Sing You. She has worked closely with various folk arts councils and heritage groups, organizing concerts and folklore events.
Best has received numerous awards and honors in recognition of her contributions to heritage preservation and the cultural life of the province.
