Biography

Anthony V. (Tony) Bouza, a retired police officer, dedicated his career to serving the New York City Police Department from 1953 to 1976. Starting as a detective in the undercover unit, Bureau of Special Services and Investigation (BOSSI),he rose through the ranks to become Assistant Chief and Commander of the Bronx.

In 1976, Bouza was featured in the groundbreaking TV documentary The Police Tapes. He then served as Deputy Chief of the New York City Transit Police from 1977 to 1979.

In 1980, Mayor Donald Fraser brought Bouza to Minneapolis to head the police department, which had been plagued by scandals under his predecessor. Bouza served as police chief of the Minneapolis Police Department for three three-year terms, from 1980 to 1989.

After retiring from policing, Tony Bouza has been a vocal advocate for police reform, testifying for the defense in numerous trials across the country involving allegations of police mistreatment.

In addition to his writing career, Bouza pens a monthly column for the Minneapolis community paper Southside Pride. He has also authored numerous books, some of which he humorously recommends for those struggling with insomnia.
