Anthony Higgins was born on May 9, 1947, in East Northamptonshire, England, to parents who had emigrated from Ireland. His parents lived in London during the Blitz and later moved to Northamptonshire, where his father found work as a builder for American army bases. Higgins completed his studies at a state school and initially intended to become a journalist. He worked as a butcher and then as a builder's helper before pursuing a career in acting.
Higgins won a scholarship to the Birmingham School of Speech and Dramatic Arts in 1964 and studied there for three years. He made his professional debut at the Birmingham Repertory Theater Company in Shakespeare's "A Winter's Tale" and later joined the company full-time, playing principal roles.
