During this period, he made significant contributions to the iconic science fiction series Doctor Who, serving as a script editor and writer from 1977 to 1979. Although his primary focus shifted towards print authorship in the 1980s, he continued to make sporadic appearances in televised productions until 1999.
As a prolific author, Read delved into the realm of World War II histories, crafting engaging narratives that captivated readers. Additionally, he took on the role of chair for the Writers' Guild of Great Britain, utilizing his expertise to support fellow writers.
