Biography

Jose Goyena Revilla Jr., born Armando Goyena, was a renowned Filipino actor, born to Jose Revilla Sr. and Florentina Goyena, both from high society in Manila. He married model and socialite Paquita Roces in 1951, and they had eight children, three of whom entered the show business, including Maritess Revilla, Tina Revilla, and Johnny Revilla.

Goyena graduated from De La Salle College, where he studied commerce, and initially managed a soda fountain in Manila. His life took a dramatic turn when playwright Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero invited him to join a production of Filipino Players, leading to a successful acting career.

Goyena acted in numerous productions, including 'Wanted: A Chaperone' (1946),'Condemned' (1946),'Wow! These Americans' (1947),and 'What a Guy!' (1948). He also worked with Lamberto V. Avellana and his Barangay Theater Guild, appearing in 'Joan of Lorraine' as Dunois, 'Summer and Smoke' as John, and 'A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino' as Tony Javier.

Goyena's breakthrough in films came when he was cast as an army lieutenant in 'Puting Bantayog' (1948),followed by his first starring role in 'Maria Beles' (1949). He formed a popular love team with Tessie Quintana, starring in 15 films, including 'Sa Tokyo ikinasal' (1948),'Ibigin mo ako, lalaking matapang' (1949),'Virginia' (1949),and 'Tenyente Carlos Blanco' (1952).

Goyena's iconic role as the first Filipino Captain Marvel in 'Kapitan Kidlat' (1953) cemented his status as a leading man. He went on to star in 44 films before retiring in 1958. His last film was 'Casa Grande' (1958),alongside a powerhouse cast.

After a 30-year hiatus, Goyena returned to acting, appearing in films such as 'Mahal kita, walang iba' (1992),'Pagdating ng panahon' (1998),and 'Yamashita: The Tiger's Treasure' (2001). He won the FAMAS award for Best Actor, a testament to his enduring talent.

Goyena's legacy extended beyond his acting career, as he left behind a family of eight illustrious children and 29 grandchildren. He passed away on March 10, 2011, due to pulmonary embolism, leaving behind a lasting impact on the Philippine film industry.
