Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte, a prominent Chilean general, held sway over Chile for a prolonged period, spanning from 1973 to 1990. Initially, he led the Military Junta of Chile from 1973 to 1981, subsequently being proclaimed President of the Republic by the junta in 1974. This marked the beginning of his tenure as the de facto dictator of Chile. Later, from 1981 to 1990, he assumed the office of DE Jure President following the approval of a new Constitution by a referendum in 1980, which formally legitimized his position.
