Growing up, Barry worked behind the scenes on various projects with his father, and later co-starred with him in three television series: "The Van Dyke Show" in 1988, "Diagnosis Murder" in 1993, and "Murder 101" in 2006. Barry met his wife, Mary, when they were both 16 years old, and they married seven years later. The couple has four children: Carey Van Dyke, Shane Van Dyke, Wes Van Dyke, and Taryn Van Dyke. All four children have guest-starred alongside their father and grandfather in scripts written by Barry on the hit television show "Diagnosis Murder" in 1993.
